The History Of Camp Wingmann
Camp Wingmann is anything but just another youth camp. As a Christian-centered program, Camp Wingmann is all about helping children discover Christianity and grow in their faith. It’s our belief that what we do here provides youth with the foundation they need to put Christ at the center of their lives.
We need to go all the way back to 1928 to revisit the first Camp Wingmann retreat at Moccasin Island in the Everglades. Campers spent a week participating in singing and chapel time, advancing their Christian education, and playing a ton of games. It’s safe to say the camp was an absolute hit in spite of the bugs and heat.
For more than 40 years, attendance at Camp Wingmann remained steady. Unfortunately, families began to lose interest in church camps in the 1970s. In 1979, local church leaders decided to sell the property and use the money to build a new youth camp near Orlando that focused on helping teens and adults overcome drug addiction.
After being put on the market once again, the diocese had no youth church camp for 20 years. Everything changed in 1998 when the camp was repurchased by three alumni who felt they were called by God to return the camp to its original mission — to serve as a place for kids to learn about Jesus and grow in their faith.
Today, Camp Wingmann is regarded throughout the state as the premier Christian camp for kids.
What To Expect At Our Christian Camp
Here at Camp Wingmann, our staff goes above and beyond to create a fun, welcoming atmosphere for all campers. Your child can expect a week of art and drama activities, music and dance, sports, and water activities. Don’t worry — every member of the Camp Wingmann team has passed an extensive background check and has a passion for guiding participants through an awesome week of fun and Christian education.
We have everything your child needs to enjoy their time at Camp Wingmann. Our air conditioned cabins have showers and plenty of space for their personal belongings. In terms of food, Camp Wingmann provides three nutritious meals a day for campers. We are more than happy to work with you if your child has dietary restrictions.
